2025 Season in Review: Billy McKinney
The 2025 Texas Rangers season has come to a close, and it's time to reflect on the players who made an impact. Today, we're focusing on outfielder Billy McKinney.
Billy McKinney, a Texas native and Plano West graduate, was a highly touted prospect in 2013. He was the first-round pick of the Oakland Athletics, showcasing a sweet swing and excellent bat speed. However, his power never materialized as expected, and his overall performance fell short of initial projections.
McKinney's journey through the minor leagues was marked by numerous trades. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs, then to the New York Yankees, and eventually to the Toronto Blue Jays. His value seemed to diminish with each transaction, indicating a decline in his star power.
In 2025, McKinney had two brief stints with the Texas Rangers. He was released by the New York Mets and signed with the Rangers in May, providing depth during a time of need. He made a few appearances, going 1 for 7, before being designated for assignment. After clearing waivers, he opted for free agency and re-signed with the Rangers.
Later in the season, with injuries plaguing the team, McKinney was added to the 40-man and active roster in September. He played four games, batting 3 for 13, which was a decent showing given the circumstances. McKinney's role was to provide a temporary solution when the team needed additional players.
Despite his efforts, McKinney's performance in 2025 was not impressive. His slash line of .200/.238/.250 reflects a struggle to find consistency. However, his experience and versatility make him a valuable asset for the team, especially during the offseason.
Looking ahead, McKinney is likely to sign a minor league deal with an NRI (Non-Roster Invite). He will participate in spring training, but may not make the major league roster. Instead, he will spend the 2026 season in the minors, waiting for his chance to contribute in the big leagues. This journey is a testament to the challenges faced by many players in the professional sports world.
