Case Western Reserve University's Historic Adelbert Gym Gets a $20 Million Makeover (2026)

Case Western Reserve University is embarking on a transformative renovation project, investing nearly $20 million to revitalize one of its most historic buildings, Adelbert Gym. This ambitious endeavor marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first expansion of the gym in over a century. The renovation, set to commence this month, will not only enhance the gym's functionality but also contribute to the university's overall academic and athletic offerings.

The project, designed by OSports, a Cleveland-based architecture firm, and managed by Panzica Construction, will introduce a range of modern amenities. These include expanded locker rooms for men's and women's basketball teams, a new social space known as the Spartan Gallery, showcasing the university's rich sports history, and a larger lobby and entry tower. The renovation will also ensure full accessibility to all levels of the building, featuring an elevator and accessible public restrooms.

A notable aspect of this renovation is the naming of the basketball court, Brennan Industries Court, in honor of a generous donation from Brennan Industries and its chairman, David Carr. This donation, along with previous commitments, underscores the university's commitment to fostering community support and reciprocating with enhanced facilities and programs.

The renovation's impact extends beyond the gym's physical transformation. It will increase the seating capacity to 1,400, providing a more vibrant atmosphere for students and community members alike. The project also aligns with the university's historical context, as the last expansion in 1918 was initially intended as a World War I armory, though it was eventually integrated into the gym's structure.

CWRU President Eric Kaler expressed enthusiasm for the project's completion, envisioning DiSanto Arena as a modern and premier facility for students and the community. The renovation is scheduled for completion in May 2027, marking a significant chapter in the university's history and its commitment to excellence in athletics and student life.
