Chikungunya Alert: Hong Kong's Tsing Yi Nature Trails Identified as High-Risk Area - Stay Safe! (2026)

Chikungunya Outbreak Persists in Hong Kong, With Cases Seen on Tsing Yi Nature Trails

(Vax-Before-Travel News)

Hong Kong is continuing to report both travel-associated and locally acquired chikungunya fever (CF) cases in 2025. On December 7, 2025, the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced that the total includes 10 locally transmitted cases and 68 infections among travelers.

According to CHP, several confirmed CF cases have been linked to mosquito bites encountered while hiking on the Tsing Yi Nature Trails, a high-risk area for transmission. The agency urged anyone who recently visited the Tsing Yi North region or hiked the Tsing Yi Nature Trails to seek medical evaluation promptly if relevant symptoms develop and to call the CHP enquiry hotline at 2125 2373.

Public health officials also called on residents and workers in the Queen’s Road West area (near Morrison Street and Hollywood Road) who experienced fever, rash, or joint pain on or after November 15, 2025 to seek medical advice or contact CHP without delay.

Geographically, this area lies northwest of central Hong Kong and east of Hong Kong Disneyland. CHP officers continue to inform people in the above locations about potential symptoms and emphasize diligent household hygiene to reduce transmission.

To inform international travelers, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued Travel Health Notices in 2025. As of December 5, 2025, the CDC added Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to its Level 2 advisory list.

In the Americas, PAHO reports over 289,000 chikungunya cases and 141 related fatalities for the year, with most confirmations in Bolivia, Brazil, and Cuba.

The CDC notes that protection against mosquito bites is essential, including the use of insect repellent. Vaccination is recommended for travelers heading to any area experiencing a CF outbreak in 2025.

In the United States, chikungunya vaccines are available at travel clinics and pharmacies.
