Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Bangladesh's Path to Adaptation (2025)

Bangladesh is on the frontlines of a climate crisis that threatens to upend its very foundation—from crumbling infrastructure to a fragile agri-food system. But here's where it gets even more urgent: recent data reveals that flooding alone is already costing the transport sector a staggering €12.3 billion, with projections showing this number will skyrocket by 2050. This isn't just about roads and bridges; it's about food security, livelihoods, and the future of millions.

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is stepping in with a bold plan to tackle these interconnected challenges head-on. Building on a pipeline of 35 climate-screened infrastructure projects developed in partnership with Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), GCA is now zeroing in on three to four high-impact investment projects. And this is the part most people miss: these projects aren’t just about traditional infrastructure—they’re integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to fortify agri-food value chains and protect vulnerable communities. Think mangrove restoration to buffer against storm surges, or sustainable water management systems to combat salinity intrusion.

Supported by UK International Development and funded by the UK government, GCA is using a cutting-edge, data-driven approach. This includes climate risk analytics, spatial mapping of agri-food hotspots, multi-criteria analysis, and early investment case development. But here’s the controversial part: while NbS are celebrated for their sustainability, scaling them up requires significant upfront investment and long-term commitment. Is Bangladesh—or the world—ready to make that leap?

The first phase of this initiative involves reviewing the 35 project ideas from the Bangladesh Climate Resilient Infrastructure Investment Roadmap, shortlisting 10-15 projects with strong ties to NbS and agri-food systems, and applying a multi-criteria analysis to prioritize the most impactful ones. To ensure buy-in and collaboration, GCA is hosting a series of three roundtable discussions between December 2025 and March 2026. The inaugural roundtable aims to validate the prioritization process, align financing opportunities, and set the stage for bankable, NbS-integrated investments.

Here’s where you come in: What do you think? Are Nature-based Solutions the game-changer Bangladesh needs, or are they too risky and resource-intensive? Share your thoughts in the comments—this conversation is just getting started.
