A New Chapter for Dixon Machado: From Player to Manager
The Chicago Cubs have made a significant move by hiring Dixon Machado as the manager of their Arizona Complex League affiliate, marking a pivotal shift in his baseball journey. This decision effectively concludes his 17-year professional playing career, which saw him spend most of his time in the minor leagues.
Machado's journey is a testament to perseverance. He played nearly 1300 minor league games, predominantly at the Triple-A level. His MLB stint with the Tigers from 2015 to 2018 was a highlight, followed by a two-season adventure with the Lotte Giants in Korea. A brief MLB comeback with the San Francisco Giants in 2022 was his last hurrah as a player.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite his impressive resume, Machado never received a call-up from the Cubs, who signed him to multiple minor league contracts. However, they evidently saw his value as an organizational mentor, which led to this coaching opportunity.
And this is the part most people miss: Machado's transition to coaching is a common path for many veteran players. As he approaches his 34th birthday, he's chosen to share his wealth of experience with the next generation of ballplayers. He'll be managing a rookie ball team, primarily made up of teenagers signed from Latin America.
In his playing career, Machado appeared in 177 major league games, batting .226/.285/.292 with 107 hits and two home runs. His Triple-A performance was solid, hitting .256 in over 3000 plate appearances, and he excelled in the KBO with a .279/.357/.392 batting line over two seasons.
