"This study presents an intriguing hypothesis," says Prof Brunstrom. "It suggests that unprocessed diets allow us to eat more by weight, but fewer calories overall, due to this tension."

"Overeating isn't necessarily the issue. In fact, our research shows that those on a wholefood diet ate significantly more. But the nutritional content of food influences our choices, and ultra-processed foods seem to nudge us towards higher-calorie options, leading to excess energy intake and obesity."
