With Daigneault out of the running, the competition for the Western Conference coaching spot was primarily between Mitch Johnson and David Adelman of the Denver Nuggets. The Spurs' crucial victory on Sunday, which improved their season record to 33-16, secured Johnson's selection. Meanwhile, the Nuggets' loss to the Thunder dropped their record to 33-17, just behind the Spurs.
The NBA has yet to announce how the coach for the third All-Star team will be determined, leaving a bit of mystery surrounding the full coaching lineup.
But here's where it gets truly remarkable: Johnson achieved this milestone after an incredibly challenging day. It all began at 6 a.m. ET in Charlotte, where the team was unexpectedly stranded overnight due to an 11-inch snowfall. This weather event grounded over a thousand flights and forced the NBA to reschedule Sunday's game against the Magic from 3 p.m. CT to 6 p.m. CT.
As if that wasn't enough, once the skies cleared and the Spurs were able to take off for San Antonio, their pilot announced an emergency diversion to Atlanta due to a mechanical issue. This unexpected stop caused another two-hour delay to the game's tipoff. The team finally landed in San Antonio nearly 4½ hours before the game was set to begin.
Spurs forward Keldon Johnson recounted the harrowing experience: "It was a little scary. They came on the intercom and said we were losing cabin pressure. We had to emergency land. Our pilot took care of us. After that, the mood kind of lightened up and went back to joking. It was scary."
This marks a significant achievement for Mitch Johnson, who is in his first full season as the Spurs' head coach. He becomes only the second All-Star Game head coach in franchise history, following the legendary Gregg Popovich back in 2016.
