Get ready for a heated debate! Quentin Tarantino, the renowned filmmaker, has sparked controversy with his recent comments about Paul Dano's performance in the critically acclaimed film, 'There Will Be Blood'. In a candid interview on 'The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast', Tarantino shared his thoughts on the 2007 masterpiece, ranking it highly but with a surprising twist.
Tarantino, a two-time Academy Award winner, praised the film's overall quality but pointed out a 'big giant flaw' - Paul Dano's performance. He boldly stated, 'The flaw is Paul Dano. It's supposed to be a two-hander, but it's not. He's weak sauce, a weak sister.' Ouch! That's a bold statement from someone of Tarantino's stature.
But here's where it gets interesting. Tarantino went on to commend Daniel Day-Lewis' performance, which earned him an Oscar. He argued that Day-Lewis' presence overshadowed Dano, saying, 'He doesn't need anything. The movie would've had more depth.'
Ellis, the host, suggested that Day-Lewis' 'gargantuan' portrayal might have overshadowed Dano. Tarantino's response? 'So you put him with the weakest male actor in SAG? The limpest dick in the world?' A bold and controversial statement indeed!
Representatives for Dano were contacted by The Hollywood Reporter but did not respond by the time of publication.
Tarantino continued, 'I'm not saying he's terrible, but his performance is a non-entity. I don't care for him, just like I don't care for Owen Wilson or Matthew Lillard.'
Despite Tarantino's critique, 'There Will Be Blood' earned two Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Day-Lewis and Cinematography. The film was a critical success, with John DeFore of THR predicting its awards success, stating, 'Built around Daniel Day-Lewis' powerhouse performance, it's an awards contender and a must-watch for serious cinephiles.'
So, what do you think? Is Tarantino's critique fair, or is he being too harsh? Do you agree with his assessment of Dano's performance? Join the discussion and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
