The Bingley Gallery's Summer Exhibition is a celebration of the extraordinary artistic talent in our region, showcasing a diverse range of styles and mediums. This year's exhibition is particularly special, as it features a mix of established and emerging artists, offering a unique insight into contemporary artistic practice. Among the featured artists is Nigerian-born, Bradford-based artist Lateefat Tobrun, whose work explores migration and identity through textile art. Her pieces, created using African wax prints and layered textile construction, depict the weight of carrying one's heritage, the process of repair and renewal, and the eventual growth and blooming of identity. This is a powerful and personal statement, challenging the notion of a fixed identity and highlighting the ongoing journey of self-discovery. Another notable artist is Tamara Lawson, an international-selling artist with a background in stage design. Her paintings, inspired by the moorland views and seasonal changes of Ilkley, are bold and contemporary, and are increasingly sought after for modern interiors. The exhibition also showcases the work of Heather Swain, a former art teacher who has returned to her creative roots with a passion for reduction lino printing. Her new editions, including a captivating view from Otley Chevin, demonstrate the absorbing and painstaking nature of the lino printing process. The exhibition's variety is further enhanced by the work of Ian Burdall, a Saltaire-based artist who continues his fascination with the Yorkshire coast. His paintings and drawings, created using oils and pastel, capture the industrial harbours, working boats, and people whose lives are shaped by the sea. The exhibition also features the work of Tony Dexter, whose bold and expressive acrylics depict fishing boats and Highland crofts, and Suzanne McQuade, whose delicate and evocative watercolours bring a sense of calm. The gallery favourite, Bonehead, provides a playful counterpoint with his distinctive mix of laser-cutting, stencil work, and irreverent humour. His new works sold out quickly, demonstrating the popularity of his unique style. The exhibition also welcomes back Stella Verity and Rob Thompson, who have introduced collage and historical recreation into their latest work, respectively. Additionally, the gallery regulars L Amy Charlesworth, Jane Fielder, Judith Levin, and David Starley, as well as ceramicist Jane Hurford, contribute to the diverse and engaging nature of the exhibition.
