A crisis has unfolded in Tunbridge Wells, leaving approximately **23,000 residents without water** – a situation that's set to extend through the night. This disruption, as reported by Christian Fuller and Cash Murphy of the BBC, stems from an issue at a local water treatment works.
South East Water (SEW) issued an apology to customers in the Tunbridge Wells area on Saturday, citing problems with water supply, including complete outages and low pressure. Initially, the estimated resolution time was set for Monday at 6:00 AM GMT, but this timeline has since been adjusted.
According to Matthew Dean, head of operations control, the Pembury Water Treatment Works experienced a shutdown due to a faulty chemical batch. A fresh supply of the necessary chemicals arrived on Sunday.
Marc Sims, the SEW incident manager, confirmed that about 23,000 customers were experiencing water supply issues, a slight decrease from the previous day's 24,000. He also mentioned that around 1,150 properties in the Pembury area had their water supply restored thanks to some adjustments. The company is actively working on redistributing water and using tankers to supply the network, while also conducting water quality tests to expedite the treatment works' reopening.
To aid residents, three bottled water stations have been established in Tunbridge Wells, located at the Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre, Odeon Cinema Knights Way, and RCP Parking. These stations are expected to remain open until 10:30 PM on Sunday. However, the water station in Tonbridge was closed due to the winter festival.
SEW's customer care team and Water Direct have delivered bottled water to over 2,000 of the most vulnerable customers, including care homes. They are also in direct contact with Tunbridge Wells Hospital, providing support via a tanker.
Adding to the frustration, Nicola Hodgson, a local resident, questioned the initial placement of a water station in Tonbridge, a different town altogether. Her husband found the station empty early in the morning. She expressed the challenges of managing young children without water for drinking and functional toilets.
Mike Martin, the Tunbridge Wells MP, also reported being without water and had spoken with the SEW's chief executive. He clarified that the problem was caused by a bad batch of coagulant chemicals, and a new batch has been procured.
Meanwhile, Teresa Barrett, who runs the Black Horse pub, has been without running water since Saturday midnight, which has forced her to close the pub, leading to significant financial losses. She highlighted the critical impact on businesses in the hospitality sector, especially with pre-booked tables and staff salaries to consider.
Peter Vincent, a resident of Grove Hill, noticed issues with his water supply on Sunday morning, describing the slow water pressure from the mains.
